White paper: In-house vs. outsourcing in e-commerce

Conclusion of the authors:

The in-house solution is usually more expensive, takes more time, but offers exclusive access to resources and technology.

E-commerce outsourcing can be implemented more quickly, usually means lower costs and investments, and usually offers access to the latest technology.

Abstract:

The Institute for Retail Research in Cologne assumes that more and more purchases will be made online rather than in brick-and-mortar stores. Not everyone is benefiting equally from the digital boom: marketplaces are the big winners, with an increase of 20.2%. D2C (direct to consumer) business has also grown strongly, with an increase of 14.5%.

Four out of five SMEs say they need additional staff with digital skills to implement digital measures, according to a study by KfW. But only one in three can meet this need.

Resource scarcity, pressure to innovate, ever shorter time-to-market cycles, increasing complexity of processes, convergence of shop front ends... one possible answer to these challenges is e-commerce outsourcing.
